TIDES AND CURRENTS
The astronomical tide range in Pohang Harbor is relatively small and does not exceed 30 cm. A tidal gauge is located in the Old Port.
As per a Port Visit After Action Report in March 2008 by USS Higgins (DDG 76), "Tidal range observed was minimal and in accordance with predictions. HIG experienced 0.5 kt southeast set in the vicinity of the Pohang approaches."
As per a Port Visit After Action Report in April 2007 by USS Essex (LHD 2) "Currents at anchorage were up to 2 kt with a strong northerly wind."
The Port Directory indicates that currents are southwest at 1-2 kt in the shipping channel and that the current past the main breakwater was significant affecting ships as they entered the harbor.
