LOCATION
La Paz (24°09'N 110°18.5'W) is located 100 nmi north of the southern tip of the Mexican Baja Peninsula on the Gulf of California side (Figure IV-1, Figure IV-2, Figure IV-3, and Figure IV-4). The actual maritime distance between the ports of Cabo San Lucas and La Paz is 162 nmi. La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and possesses an enviable geographical location as a point of departure for natural history and eco tourism excursions. It is one of the best diving and sport fishing locations. The Port's main pier is located in La Paz's commercial center and is naturally protected by the Mogote peninsula that defines the inner La Paz Bay. The pier's main purpose is to serve small cruise ships. USCG vessels and patrol craft can be accommodated at the La Paz Dock but Navy vessels normally tie up at the Commercial Pier in Pichilingue Bay.
The Port of Pichilingue is located 10.3 nmi north of La Paz and has a fishing dock, a commercial pier, a cruise ship terminal, and warehousing and patios for bulk and general cargo. The Port is located at 24°15.25'N 110°20'W (Figure IV-5).
