Topography
MAZATLAN
TOPOGRAPHY
The Mazatlan coastal area is generally low and sandy with prominent islands marking the entrance to the channel. Isla Creston, which forms the west side of the outer harbor, is 499 ft (152 m) high and is connected to the peninsula by a causeway. Isla Chivos, a partly wooded islet, is 223 ft (68 m) high and lies on the east side of the entrance channel. The harbor area, lying 1 nmi above the entrance, has been extensively reclaimed using dredged material to refill the low areas during the 1950s. A long 16 nmi beach extension of white sand lies south of the Port.
Three mountains with peaks of 8075 ft (2461 m), 10,995 ft (3351 m) and 10,171 ft (3100 m) at the base of the Sierra Madre Occidental range are visible northeast of Mazatlan.
