LOCATION
Mazatlan (23°13'N 106°'25'W) is located at the entrance to the Gulf of California in Western Mexico 160 nmi north of Puerto Vallarta (Figures I-1 and I-2). Mazatlan means "Place of the Deer" for the large herds of a species similar to the American Antelope that once inhabited the forest and seaside areas. Mazatlan is a tourist resort which serves as a port for cruise ships as well as commercial traffic.
