LOCATION
Iwakuni and Kure are located in Hiroshima Bay (Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3 and Figure 4).
Iwakuni lies at the eastern end of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Its southeastern part faces the Inland Sea and its northern part adjoins Otake City in Hiroshima Prefecture. The city is backed by the mountains and its front borders on the Seto Inland Sea. Iwakuni is located 300 nmi west of Osaka and 30 nmi from Hiroshima. Tokyo is 600 nmi East of Iwakuni.
Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni is situated approximately 292 nmi south of Osaka. It is located at the southern edge of Honshu in the Nishiki River Delta. MCAS Iwakuni is home to approximately half of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing headquartered in Okinawa, elements of the 3rd Marine Logistics Group, and Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Fleet Air Wing 31, and other JMSDF units.
The Port of Iwakuni within MCAS Iwakuni, is a small, man-made port consisting of three piers (General Purpose, Ammunition, and Fuel Pier) primarily used for the movement of military cargo, ammunition, and resupply of fuel for the entire installation.
The Port of Kure is approximately 15 nm, east of the Port of Iwakuni. It is a medium-sized commercial and military port located in the Inland Sea within Hiroshima Bay.
