Westmark

Profile

Westmark BV is an industrial trading company specializing in the manufacture and supply of Cablesafe® safety devices to the marine and offshore industries, as well as to the petrochemical, mining, chemical and electrical power markets. Founded in 1991, Westmark developed a very simple device which significantly improves the safety of personnel and equipment on the work floor through safe housekeeping. Westmark's Cablesafe product is an 'S' shaped hook made of sophisticated glass reinforced polyester. The hook was designed for the offshore industry specifically for the suspension of utility cables used during construction and industrial maintenance work. Major companies, such as Dow, Exxon, Shell, ICI and Arco, use Cablesafe safety hooks to fulfil their safety requirements in the workplace. Safety hooks for safe cable handling The advantages of using the Cablesafe hook are many; it leads to a clean and well-organized work floor/deck, which improves operational safety and turnaround management; and offers better protection, and therefore extended lifetime, for all kinds of electrical cables, welding cables, extension cords, hoses and many other cabling products. Rigorous testing procedures were carried out by Det Norske Veritas (Norway) and Devonport Royal Dockyard Ltd (UK) for strength and durability. The hook was tested for operational ability at temperatures of 200°C for over 20 minutes and after this was approved for use during submarine construction and maintenance. According to the National Dutch Bureau for Statistics, 21% of industrial accidents are caused as a result of falls caused by tripping. Effective use of Cablesafe safety hooks completely removes the occurrence of hazardous working conditions caused by cables lying on floors and reduces the chance of them getting damaged. Simplicity in safety - turnaround management and industrial maintenance Recently the safety hooks have been developed in a phosphoric version that will glow in the dark. In the event of an electrical power shut down the hooks work as an orientation for an escape route in mining corridors and other void spaces. A specific application field for Cablesafe safety hooks is during NBC training exercises onboard navy vessels. They are used for the safe housekeeping of hundreds of metres of cables and hoses which are temporarily needed during the length of the exercise. They are suspended from railings and bulkheads in an orderly way so that entrances, stairs, hangars and corridors are easily accessible. In the Netherlands over 50% of shipyards have introduced Cablesafe safety hooks over the last two years due to the great advantage they offer in turnaround management and shutdown procedures. Safety hooks for safe housekeeping Cablesafe safety hooks are available in three sizes (6in, 9in and 12in) and can carry loads of up to 190kg. The safety hooks are fire retardant, non-conductive and have a very high UV resistance which ensures a long service lifetime. A hole in each end of the hook enables the user to secure and fix the safety hook itself by means of a tie rap; the same can be done with a whole bundle of cables. The hook can be produced, at customer request, in specified colours and with a ship or contractors name or logo on it.
