DanSteel

Profile

DanSteel provides quality steel plates for the offshore and international shipbuilding industries. We provide a flexible production capacity in order to supply our customers with what they need, when they need it.
DanSteel’s steel plates meet the required certifications of product quality, as well as quality management systems. In addition, we received energy management certification in 2003.
Steel plate harbour facilities
DanSteel is ideally located in Frederiksvaerk in Denmark, less than one hour from Copenhagen, close to large reserves of cooling water from natural freshwater reservoirs in addition to harbour facilities. We have our own harbour and standard-gauge rail tracks, which are linked to Lokalbanen.
We receive our raw materials from Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) in Lipetsk, 500km south of Moscow. Every week, ships carrying high-quality slabs - the basic material for steel plates - arrive from NLMK and unload in our own harbour facilities.
Shot blasting and priming, marking, tests and plasma cutting production facilities
DanSteel’s production facilities consist of a rolling mill and services in the form of shot blasting and priming, marking, tests and plasma cutting. All plates are rolled from slabs imported from Russia, mainly from Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK). The yearly production is around 505,000t.
Steel plates for offshore structures and shipbuilding
DanSteel’s plate programme includes structural and shipbuilding steel. We offer a selection of our grades, which can be supplied as standard or in agreed quantities.
During steel plate production, the plate material is hot-rolled, normalizing rolled, thermomechanically (TM) rolled or normalized after rolling, according to the quality standard. We provide acceptance and delivery in accordance with the rules of classification societies and the European standard (CE – marking).
Standard steel plates in stock
In order to provide our customers with the best service possible, DanSteel maintains a stock of frequently required standard-size steel plates. We offer steel plates in thicknesses ranging from 12mm to 100mm, and in the following dimensions: 1,000mm × 2,000mm; 1,250mm × 2,500mm and 1,500mm × 3,000mm.
Our steel plates meet the following quality standards: S235JRG2, S235JR+AR, S275JR+AR, S275JRG2, S355J2G3 and S355J2+N.
Shot blasting and priming for steel plates
DanSteel offers protection against the corrosion of steel plates immediately after rolling. Shot blasting and priming protects steel materials against corrosion, which increases the life of a steel structure and provides a better working environment.
Untreated steel materials kept in the open air corrode quickly when exposed to the atmosphere. The longer the steel material is left unprotected, the shorter the lifespan of the structure. Therefore, early protection through the cleaning and priming of the steel surface is strongly recommended.
Zinc silicate primers
DanSteel’s standard primers are two-component zinc silicate primers in red, grey and green. Paint can be applied on top of our standard primers. The thickness of the coating will be at least 15µm, corresponding to 21µm on a smooth surface or according to customer demand.
Z-qualities for steel plates
Welding can produce considerable stresses in the base material of steel plates, which can result in the formation of cracks. These cracks, which most often occur parallel to the surface of the plate, are called "lamellar tearing" and cause the deterioration of the steel in the through thickness direction.
While normal-quality steel plates are supplied with guarantees of mechanical properties either in the rolling direction of the plate or in the width of the plate (x and y-directions respectively), the properties in the through thickness direction (z-direction) are not specified. Using a special production process that includes reduction of the sulphur content in the steel, however, it is possible to supply plates (Z-qualities) with specified properties in the through thickness direction, which can minimize the risk of lamellar tearing.
Ordering Z-qualities is recommended in all places where welding is combined with stresses in the through thickness direction of the plate. DanSteel supplies all standard plate grades as Z-qualities.
Z-qualities testing
Before Z-quality plates are delivered, DanSteel takes special Z-samples, which record the reduction of the fracture area during tensile testing. A high value in the reduction of the fracture area is a sign of good Z-characteristics.
Ultrasonically tested heavy-steel plates
Ultrasonically tested heavy-steel plates are used in the design and construction of heavily stressed steel structures to register the position and size of any inclusions and laminations.
DanSteel supplies ultrasonically tested heavy-steel plates in thickness from 8mm to 100mm and in maximum lengths of 16,000mm. For the strictest standards, delivery thickness is normally restricted to a maximum of 70mm. Ultrasonic testing cannot be carried out for thicknesses below 8mm.
