Matthew, located approximately 7 nmi southeast of the harbor, the area adjacent to the harbor is mostly low in elevation. An east-west oriented 2 nmi long ridge of hills with elevations to 712 ft (217 m) lies 5 to 6 nmi northwest of the harbor. Magnetic Island, the nearest point of which is located approximately 4 nmi north of the Port of Townsville, is rugged, with much of its terrain exceeding 984 ft (300 m) in elevation.
