ANCHORAGE

While there is no designated anchorage at the Port of Townsville (Figure XI-16), there is good holding ground everywhere in Cleveland Bay (Townsville Port Authority, 1997b). It was observed during a 1997 port visit that vessels commonly anchor east of the north end of the Entrance Channel. Vessels awaiting a pilot should anchor according to draft and as close to the fairway beacons as possible. Vessels so anchoring should stay clear of the line of the Sea Channel and Platypus Channel. Because Cleveland Bay is open and vulnerable to north and northeasterly winds and seas, any location in the Bay would be untenable in a tropical cyclone threat scenario.
