The Port of Mackay has no charted anchorages. DMA (1990) states that anchorage may be taken at Flat Top and Round Top Islands at 21°10'S 149°15'E in 29.8 to 36.4 ft (9.1 to 11.1 m) water depths. Bottom type and holding quality are not specified. A local harbor authority states that ships may also anchor northeast of Slade Island. Depths, bottom type and holding quality are not specified. Both of the two identified anchorage locations are exposed to the southeasterly winds that prevail over the region, and would be untenable in a heavy weather scenario.
