TOPOGRAPHY

Rottnest Island (32°00'S 115°30'E) lies about 1 mile west-northwest of the entrance to Fremantle Inner Harbor and is a good mark when approaching the port. The coast extending from about 10 miles south from Trigg Island (31°53'S 115°45'E) to the entrance to Fremantle is generally low and sandy. This general coastal plain transitions to an escarpment approximately 20 miles inland. Seven miles south-southwest of Fremantle is Garden Island that protects Cockburn Sound from the west. Garden Island has an irregular terrain broken by several hills roughly 165 ft (50.3 m) in height. A causeway at the southwestern end of the Sound connects Garden Island with the mainland.
