LOCATION
Darwin is the principal port on the northern coast of Australia and located at 12°28'S 130°51'E (Figure XI-1 and Figure XI-29). The port is situated on a large estuary on the south shore of Beagle Gulf (Figure XI-30). A line between Charles Point and Lee Point defines the seaward limits of the port.
Darwin Naval Base is situated east southeast of Elliot Point at 12°28"S 130°49'E, and is protected by two breakwaters. The Naval Base is used primarily by the Royal Australian Navy for its coastal patrol vessels and has not been used by U. S. Naval vessels. Visiting U. S. Naval vessels normally use the Darwin commercial wharves that lie southeast of the city and are open to the south.
