CAIRNS
TIDES AND CURRENTS
Local harbor authorities state that the maximum astronomical tide range is 9.8 ft (3 m) at Cairns. A U.S. Navy ship visiting the port in 1992 reported diurnal tides with a range of 6.7 ft (2.0 m).
Currents in and near the Entrance Channel vary widely. Local harbor authorities state that cross channel currents exist in the vicinity of the mouth of Trinity Inlet. A wind-driven current may set north or south near the seaward end of the Entrance Channel. Currents up to 3 kt may exist in Trinity Inlet and in the Entrance Channel due to precipitation run off during the wet season.
