BUNBURY
ENTRANCE CHANNEL
Bunbury is approached from the north by the coastal route from Rottnest Island (32°00'S 115°30'E), from the west by the offshore route passing north of Naturaliste Reefs (33°15'S 115°02'E), or from the southwest by the coastal route from Cape Naturaliste (33°32'S 115°00'E) through Geographe Bay. Approach to Koombana Bay would normally be north of the Naturaliste Reefs, which lie about 30 miles west-northwest of McKenna Point. The dredged entrance channel is marked with beacons and range lights. Vessels enter the bay with the range lights on the east shore in line, bearing 157.25°, then steer as necessary for the Outer or Inner Harbor. The seaward part of the channel has a width of 492.2 ft (150 m) which narrows down to 426.5 ft (130 m) in the inner sections. When entering the Inner Harbor, the next range headings are 180° and 135°, which takes the vessel between Point Hamilla and Point Busaco into the berthing area. The seaward part of the channel is dredged to a depth of 42 ft (12.8 m) and the inner part, basin, and berths are dredged to a depth of 40 ft (12.2 m) (Hydrographic Service, 1992).
